Who has control of the text?

1

Writers say that they have control of the interpretation and meaning of the text. The writer states, "Listen to me, her is what I have to say." The writer wants people to listen to his voice and to what he wants to say.

1

The other end of the debate is that the reader has control of the text. It is the reader who gets to decide what the author actually means. The problem with this is that the reader will eventually eliminate the voice in the text.

2

This voice is central to Elbow's idea of being a writer. Elbow wants to preserve the writer's voice, so naturally Elbow resists activities/attempts/arguments that eliminate this central feature to being a writer.

spowner on paragraph 1:

I kept this the same because it states the problem. Also because I think it is a powerful introduction

I elaborated and clarified what the writer wants. Before it was just that the writer wants control. Now it states control of what.

For all intents and purposes this is the same. I’ve added a few words for ease of reading.

This is a new paragraph answering the last part of the question. It was a sentence part of paragraph 3, but now I’ve elaborated upon the idea.
